Tiers from Tibet

The Documentary Film about the building
of the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion

The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is being built at the Atisha Buddhist Centre, in Bendigo, Australia. The stupa will be the same size & design as the Great Stupa of Gyantse (Gyantse Kumbum) in Tibet. This will make it the largest stupa in the western world.

The size and scale of the project is a rarity in modern times. With the Blessings of the Dalai Lama, the Stupa is designed to stand for a thousand years and will exist for centuries as an icon of world peace.

Happening Films is documenting the remarkable architectural
achievement of the construction and will examine the rise of
Buddhism in the west.
Tiers from Tibet features an emphasis on visual imagery and will create an orchestral score to take audience members on an incredible journey through 5 countries with beautiful photography and sound. No plot, no actors and no script, the film will document the incredible achievement of the Stupa construction and will trace the origins and the stories of the people involved. The film will reflect the color and the vibrancy that is Buddhist life through its portrayal of the holy Lamas who visit to offer blessings, the rituals that take place and the beautiful chanting of mantras that form part of the traditions of welcoming the Stupa into being, many of which have not been heard for hundreds of years.

Filming for the project began in 2003 and has continued through the years and includes footage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s recent visit in June. Filming will continue until the construction of the Stupa is completed (estimated timeframe of 2010).

Filming has been made possible by the generous support of industry sponsors including Kodak, Cinevex and Panavision, by the volunteering of time and skills by film making professionals and from donations by the public who share a vision to keep the project alive.

The film requires an estimated $AUD300,000 in total to complete production. This relatively low sum is possible due to the generous support of donors and sponsors and is a reflection of the costs of materials and travel requirements only. It does not reflect the quality of the project which is being shot on S16mm film by experienced technicians. The film makers call on your generosity and vision to fund the project to enable its continuing production. Significant contributions will result in an Executive Producer´s title on the film and every contributor will be acknowledged in the closing titles of the film.
