Full Cast & Crew CreditsDIRECTORS STATEMENTMaking RAY was an earnest attempt by me to settle a long overdue debt. I owed Ray. I've told stories about him for years, working myself well into arrears, and it was time to make good. He would have got a kick out of it: some dumb kid who used to follow him around, grows up and blows his dough on a ten minute film named in his honour. He would have tried not to smile, then proclaimed me an idiot. I only realized his influence on me after he died. I was drawn to him as a kid just because he was weird and told fabulous lies. But I remember one of my visits home years later, my mother scratching about for news to fill any dead air at the dinner table. "I know", she blurted out, "Ray died!" I was stunned. I couldn't finish my fried rice (but that could've been the pineapple chunks). At the time of his death he was living out back of someone else's house, she said, in a caravan without wheels. Sad and perfect. We traded Ray stories for the rest of the night. I began to realize how important he had been to me growing up in that rotten town. There are probably a hundred Ray stories, but I tried to keep the film to those I had some personal involvement in and that happened roughly around the same time. It's a short after all.
